We decided to teach in Utrecht in the spring so we could see the fields of tulips. So far we've seen lots of snowdrops, the first flowers of spring...
and the lawns in the parks have large clumps of crocuses...
and fields of pretty blue flowers that look like blue snow drops,
but we haven't seen any fields of tulips yet. They tell us that it has been so cold this winter that the flowers are about 6 weeks behind schedule. So we went to Amsterdam and jumped on the modern version of a pedicab...
to consult with our flower expert, van Gogh (pronounced here "fan hhhhohhhh" with a definite double clearing of the throat).
He took us on a walk through his favorite streets and showed us some sunflowers...
and we found flower markets with plenty of cut tulips...
but the latest flower blooming in the fields and gardens is the daffodil.
However, we do see tulip leaves coming out of the ground now that the temperatures are sometimes in the 50's F. Here's a picture of the first tulip I've seen in a yard near where we live.
