Hidden away near this church in Amsterdam...
is Anne Frank's house.
In the house we found this porcelain toilet that looks just like the one in the tiny "water closet" I shared with several other residents on the floor of my first missionary "digs" in Bonn, Germany in 1962. Yes, that's right, one toilet in a small claustrophobia inducing closet in the hallway connecting several rental rooms. It was an old building from the 1880's that still had bullet holes from World War II. As soon as I saw the toilet, all sorts of memories flooded in, including the sound of the water rushing down the pipe after you pulled the chain connected to the small tank high above your head near the ceiling. You had to make sure you were standing aside or your bottom or legs would be splashed for sure. It's no wonder the Franks in their hiding place couldn't flush the toilet when anyone else was in the building as they would have been heard for sure.
